India lead with three titles. Ten T20 World Cups have been played, from 2007 to 2026, and India have won three of them — more than any other country. - India won in 2007, 2024 and 2026. The first came in the opening tournament in 2007, when they beat Pakistan by five runs in Johannesburg after choosing to bat. The [2007 group tables](/icc/t20-world-cup-2007) show how narrow that campaign was: India lost their opening group match and still went through. The second arrived seventeen years later. In the [2024 final](/icc/t20-world-cup-2024) in Bridgetown, India again batted first, made 176 for 7 and defended it by seven runs against South Africa — the only final South Africa have reached. The third was different in kind. In the [2026 final](/icc/t20-world-cup-2026) in Ahmedabad, New Zealand won the toss and put India in. India made 255 for 5 and won by 96 runs. No side had passed 200 in a T20 World Cup final before; the previous highest was India's own 176 in 2024. The defeat was in 2014 at Mirpur, where India were held to 130 for 4 and Sri Lanka chased it with thirteen balls to spare. It remains the only final India have lost, and the only one of their four in which they did not bat first. Two of India's four finals were against Pakistan or decided the same rivalry's standing in the format; the wider record between the two sides is set out on our [India versus Pakistan head-to-head page](/h2h/india-vs-pakistan). ## The toss has decided eight of ten finals This is the number that surprised us when we counted it. In eight of the ten T20 World Cup finals, the side that won the toss also won the match. Only twice has the coin gone one way and the trophy the other: in 2009, when Sri Lanka won the toss and Pakistan won the final, and in 2026, when New Zealand won the toss and India won by 96 runs. Ten matches is a small sample and this is not a prediction — a coin has no memory, and the next final is as likely to break the pattern as follow it. What the number does show is how much a single decision has been worth in this particular fixture. Captains have been split on which decision that is: only four of the ten toss winners chose to bat, and three of those four went on to win. The four who batted first were India in 2007, Sri Lanka in 2009, West Indies in 2012 and India in 2024. Sri Lanka are the only one of the four to lose. Six of the first nine were won by four wickets or more with balls to spare, and the three decided by runs were won by five, thirty-six and seven runs. India's 96-run win in 2026 is nearly three times the previous widest margin, which was West Indies beating Sri Lanka by 36 runs in Colombo in 2012. At the other end, the narrowest final by runs was the very first one: India by five runs over Pakistan in 2007. The 2024 final was almost as tight at seven runs. Both were defended by India after batting first, and both were won by a team that had chosen to bat. ## The sides that reached a final and never won Two countries have played in a T20 World Cup final without winning one. New Zealand have lost both of theirs, to Australia in 2021 and to India in 2026. South Africa have played one, the 2024 final in Bridgetown, and lost it by seven runs. West Indies are the only side with a perfect record: two finals, two titles, in 2012 and 2016. No other country has won more than one final without also losing one. ## One batter was named in both West Indies finals Marlon Samuels was named player of the match in the 2012 final and again in the 2016 final. Both are West Indies' only two titles, four years apart, and no other player appears twice in the player of the match record for a T20 World Cup final in the archive we hold. The other award winners are spread across ten different names, among them Irfan Pathan in 2007, Virat Kohli in 2024 and Jasprit Bumrah in 2026 — the only bowler to take the award in an India final. ## Only one ground has staged two finals Ten finals have been played at nine grounds. The exception is Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, which staged England's win over Australia in 2010 and India's win over South Africa in 2024 — fourteen years apart, and both decided by a side defending a total. The other eight are the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Lord's in London, the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, the Melbourne Cricket Ground and the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Two of the ten finals have therefore been played in India, in 2016 and 2026, and India won the second of them. ## How we read these results A champion is taken from the match the archive marks as the final: the outcome field names the winner and carries the margin. That is one match per tournament, and it is either in the record or it is not. For the T20 World Cup it is present for all ten. Group tables need much more. A table is only correct when every match in that group is counted, because one missing game moves both the points and the net run rate. Our [T20 World Cup section](/icc/t20-world-cup) therefore publishes 39 group tables across nine tournaments, and 2016 has no page at all: the group stage of that edition is incomplete in the open archive, so we do not show a table we cannot stand behind. The 2016 champion is still on this page, because a champion needs one match and a table needs all of them. That gap is also why some tournaments show fewer groups than they had. We parse the ball-by-ball files ourselves and count the totals from the deliveries; nothing on this page is copied from another list. The tournament is named three different ways across those years — ICC World Twenty20, World T20 and ICC Men's T20 World Cup — and we treat them as one competition, because they are one. We date each tournament by its final rather than by the season label in the archive, which is why the 2007 event appears here as 2007 and not as 2007/08.
