18+ Betting money on cricket carries a direct risk of financial loss, and it can become an addiction. Real-money online gaming is banned across India under the PROG Act 2025, which came into force on 1 May 2026.

If betting is already costing you money you need, or sleep, or people close to you, the free Tele-MANAS helpline is **14416**, and it runs in 20 languages. Our [page on help for gambling harm](/guides/help-for-gambling-harm-india) lists what else exists.

---

Twelve early signs of gambling harm you can spot in yourself, grouped by the three features clinicians look at, plus verified helpline numbers for India.

The earliest signs are usually about money and control, not about the size of a win. Bigger stakes for the same feeling, betting again to recover a loss, spending money set aside for bills, borrowing to keep going, and not being able to state your total loss. Those five come before anyone at home notices.

This page lists twelve such signs, shows which clinical feature each one points at, and ends with numbers you can call today. It gives no score and no diagnosis.

## How to read this list

Twelve signs are listed below. Each one is a behaviour you can notice in yourself without any test. No single item proves anything.

This page does not diagnose. It cannot. Only a clinician can say whether a pattern is a disorder. What a list like this can do is help you name what is happening, in plain words, before the debt grows.

A fair way to use it: read all twelve, then count the ones that were true in the last month. Write the number down. Come back to that number in two weeks. Movement in either direction tells you more than the count itself.

If reading this is making your chest tight, skip to the last section. It has numbers you can call today.

One more note on tone. Nothing here is meant as blame. Betting products are built to hold attention, and holding attention is the point of the design. Noticing that early is a skill, not a confession.

## What clinicians actually look for

Gambling harm has a formal name in medicine. The World Health Organization lists gambling disorder as code 6C50, under disorders due to addictive behaviours ([WHO](https://www.who.int/teams/mental-health-and-substance-use/alcohol-drugs-and-addictive-behaviours/terminology)).

Three features sit at the centre of that definition. A peer-reviewed study quotes them as impaired control over gambling; gambling taking priority over other life interests and daily activities; and gambling that continues or grows despite bad consequences ([Online Gambling Disorder Questionnaire study, 2020](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7020023/)).

Time matters too. The same paper states the behaviour is normally evident over a period of at least twelve months before a diagnosis is given ([source](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7020023/)). One heavy weekend is not a disorder. A pattern held for a year is a different thing.

Keep those three features in mind as you read. Most of the twelve signs are everyday versions of one of them. We are describing behaviour, not handing out a label.

## Signs about money

### 1. The stake keeps growing to feel the same

You used to bet ₹200 and it felt like something. Now ₹200 feels flat, so it is ₹1,000. Nothing about the match changed. Only the number needed to hold your attention changed.

### 2. You bet again to win back what just went

A bet loses. Within minutes you place another one, bigger, to get level. This is chasing. It is the single most common way a bad hour turns into a bad month.

### 3. Money meant for something else goes in

Rent money. School fees. The bill you had set aside. You tell yourself it is only borrowed from yourself and will come back tonight. It usually does not.

### 4. You borrow, sell or take an advance to keep going

An app loan. A friend. A gold chain. A salary advance you explain in vague terms. Borrowing to fund a bet moves the loss forward and adds interest to it.

### 5. You cannot say what the total loss is

Try it now. Add up the last three months. If you do not want to open the statement, or the figure comes out far higher than your guess, that gap is the sign.

People often keep the wins in memory and let the losses blur. The margin built into odds is a real cost on every bet, win or lose. We explain that cost on [our page about overround](/guides/what-is-overround).

## Signs about time and thinking

### 6. The next bet is on your mind all day

At work, in class, at dinner, you are running through markets and prices. Sleep gets pushed for a late match. The betting is not filling spare time any more. It is setting the timetable.

### 7. You decide to stop and start again anyway

You set a rule. No bets this week, or ₹500 as the cap. It breaks within days, more than once. The repeat matters more than the single slip.

### 8. You believe a system will fix the maths

A staking plan. A tip source. Doubling after a loss. The feeling is that skill or a pattern will turn losses around. The odds carry a fee whatever the plan, and the fee does not care about your system. See [how expected value works](/guides/expected-value-explained).

### 9. Fast in-play markets pull you back in

You meant to place one bet before the toss. Instead you are betting on runs in the next over, over and over. Very fast markets give many chances per hour to chase. What session and fancy markets are, and why they move so fast, is covered in [our explainer on session bets](/guides/what-is-a-session-bet).

## Signs about people and mood

### 10. You hide it, edit it or lie about it

The app is behind a folder or a second phone. You delete notifications. When asked, you name a smaller figure. Hiding takes energy, and the energy spent hiding is itself the warning.

### 11. Your mood follows the result

A win lifts you far more than the money should. A loss brings anger, shame or a flat blankness for hours. People at home learn to read your face for the score.

### 12. Things you cared about start slipping

Work suffers. Studies slide. You skip the family thing to watch a match you have money on. This is the third clinical feature in everyday form: it keeps going even as the cost lands ([criteria as quoted in the OGD-Q study](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7020023/)).

## How to hold your own answers

There is no cut-off on this page and we will not invent one. Published screening tools use scores; we are not one of those tools.

Use it as a rough map instead. One or two items, watch it and set a hard limit. Four or more, treat it as serious and talk to someone this week. Any of signs 3, 4 or 12, get help now, whatever the total.

**Table 1. Which of the three clinical features each sign points at**

| Sign | Feature it points at |
|---|---|
| 1, 2, 7, 9 | Impaired control over gambling |
| 6, 8, 12 | Gambling taking priority over other activities |
| 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 | Carrying on despite the harm it causes |

Grouping follows the three ICD-11 features quoted in the study cited above. The grouping is our reading, not a clinical instrument. No validated Indian screening tool with published cut-offs was confirmed by us, so no score thresholds appear here.

## When this is an emergency, not a worry

Some situations need help today, not next week. Do not wait for a count of signs.

- You are thinking about ending your life, or about self-harm.
- A lender is threatening you or your family.
- You have taken money that was not yours to take.
- You cannot pay for food, medicine or rent this week.

In those cases, call a counselling line first, before making any more money decisions. Tele-MANAS answers at any hour on 14416, in 20 languages ([PIB](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2199421&reg=48&lang=2)). For a medical emergency in India, the ambulance number 108 is listed by the NIMHANS Centre for Addiction Medicine ([NIMHANS CAM](https://cam.nimhans.ac.in/?page_id=410)).

## What to do in the next hour

Small, boring steps work better than a big promise. Pick two of these and finish them before you close the page.

- Call Tele-MANAS on 14416 or 1-800-891-4416. It is free and open now ([PIB](https://www.pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2022057)).
- Or message the Vandrevala Foundation line on +91 9999 666 555, which runs on call and WhatsApp at all hours ([Vandrevala Foundation](https://www.vandrevalafoundation.com/free-counseling)).
- Open your bank app and switch off online card transactions. Your bank must give you that switch, day or night ([Reserve Bank of India](https://www.rbi.org.in/Scripts/NotificationUser.aspx?Id=11788&Mode=0)).
- Tell one person a true number. Not the story, just the figure.
- Write your losses for the last three months on paper. Keep the paper.

Then pick a next step for this week. Gamblers Anonymous lists free peer meetings in Thane, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Dombivli. The Delhi group publishes a hotline on +91 88269 04945 ([Gamblers Anonymous](https://gamblersanonymous.org/international-meetings/?state&country=india&weekday&term=146)). The full list of what we verified, with hours, is on [our help page](/guides/help-for-gambling-harm-india).

## What this page cannot do

It cannot tell you whether you have a disorder. It cannot treat you. It cannot hold your money for you.

It also cannot stop the apps. Blocking tools live on your phone and in your bank, and each one can be switched back. What each tool blocks, and how it gets bypassed, is set out on [our page on limits and self-exclusion](/guides/self-exclusion-and-limits).

One more thing worth knowing. Real-money online gaming is banned across India since 1 May 2026 ([Nishith Desai Associates](https://nishithdesai.com/research-and-articles/hotline/gaming-law-wrap/setting-the-rules-of-the-game-indias-online-gaming-law-comes-into-force-15586)). So there is no licensed operator here to complain to and no regulator-run account closure to request. Our starting point for all of this is [the responsible gaming hub](/responsible-gaming), and the legal picture is on [the 2026 law page](/legal/online-betting-law-india).

## Questions people ask

### How many of these signs mean I have a problem?

We do not publish a cut-off, because we could not verify a screening tool with Indian thresholds. Treat any sign that involves borrowed money or missed bills as serious on its own.

### Can betting be a real medical condition?

Yes. Gambling disorder is code 6C50 in the World Health Organization classification, under disorders due to addictive behaviours ([WHO](https://www.who.int/teams/mental-health-and-substance-use/alcohol-drugs-and-addictive-behaviours/terminology)). Whether it applies to a person is a clinician's call.

### I only bet on cricket during the season. Does that count?

Seasonal betting can still cause harm. The formal definition looks at a pattern normally evident over at least twelve months, which can include gaps ([criteria quoted in the OGD-Q study](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7020023/)). Look at the money and the control, not the calendar.

### How do I bring this up with my son or husband?

Start with one fact and one request, not a list of failures. Ask what is owed. Offer to sit with them while they call 14416. Gamblers Anonymous also lists one open meeting in Hyderabad that family may attend ([Gamblers Anonymous](https://gamblersanonymous.org/international-meetings/?state&country=india&weekday&term=146)).
