18+ Betting money on cricket carries a direct risk of financial loss, and it can become an addiction. Real-money online gaming is banned across India under the PROG Act 2025, which came into force on 1 May 2026.

If betting is already costing you money you need, or sleep, or people close to you, the free Tele-MANAS helpline is **14416**, and it runs in 20 languages. Our [page on help for gambling harm](/guides/help-for-gambling-harm-india) lists what else exists.

A session bet prices runs in a block of overs with a buy and sell number. See the maths, why losses run past the stake, and why nothing can be checked.

A session bet is a bet on the runs scored in a named block of overs. It is quoted as two numbers, a sell and a buy, and your profit or loss is measured per run away from that number. That means the loss is not capped at your stake.

This page shows the quote maths with worked figures, explains why the rate changes on every ball and leaves no record you can check, and sets out why sessions usually run through an agent rather than any operator.

## What a session actually is

A session is a block of overs inside an innings. Six overs. Ten overs. Fifteen overs. The block is named, and the question is always the same: how many runs will come in it?

You are not shown a normal price. You are shown a runs number, called the rate, with a buy side and a sell side. Take the buy side and you win if the block beats the number. Take the sell side and you win if it falls short.

Some readers call this a bracket. Others call it session runs. The word session comes from the trade itself, not from any rulebook of cricket.

The activity is banned. Real-money online gaming is illegal across India under the PROG Act 2025, in force from 1 May 2026, and the ban reaches offshore operators ([Nishith Desai](https://nishithdesai.com/research-and-articles/hotline/gaming-law-wrap/setting-the-rules-of-the-game-indias-online-gaming-law-comes-into-force-15586)). This page exists to explain a mechanism that costs people money, not to help anyone use it.

## How a session quote is built

A session quote has two numbers and they are never the same. The seller buys at the lower one and sells at the higher one. That gap is the fee, and it works like the spread in spread betting.

Spread betting pays out on how right you were, not on a simple win or lose ([Wikipedia on spread betting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spread_betting)). A published cricket example makes the trap clear. On a quote of 340 to 350 runs, if the team makes 345, the buyer at 350 loses 5 unit points and the seller at 340 also loses 5 unit points ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spread_betting)).

Both sides lose at once. That is the whole design.

**Inputs.** A session on the first 6 overs. Quote: sell 48, buy 50. Stake ₹1,000 per run.

**Formula.** Buyer's profit = (actual runs − 50) × stake per run. Seller's profit = (48 − actual runs) × stake per run.

**Result.** Actual 49 runs: buyer loses 1 × ₹1,000 = ₹1,000, and seller loses 1 × ₹1,000 = ₹1,000. Actual 60 runs: buyer wins ₹10,000, seller loses ₹12,000. Actual 40: buyer loses ₹10,000, seller wins ₹8,000.

**Assumptions.** The 48 to 50 quote is our illustration, not a real quote. The gap of 2 runs on a line near 50 is 4% of the line, and it is charged on both sides. Losses here are open-ended, because runs have no ceiling.

Read that last assumption twice. A fixed-odds bet can only lose the stake. A runs-based bet loses stake multiplied by how wrong you were.

## Why it empties a balance faster than anything else

Four features combine, and each one shortens the time you last.

- Speed. A T20 innings is 20 overs, which is 120 legal balls ([Wikipedia on Twenty20](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty20)), because an over is six legal deliveries ([Wikipedia on the over](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Over_(cricket))). Sessions can be quoted and settled inside a few minutes.
- Volume. Reporting on Indian networks says most bets during IPL matches are placed ball by ball, from as little as ₹500, with odds shifting on every ball ([NDTV](https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/inside-the-shadow-economy-riding-ipl-online-betting-networks-11560908)).
- Open-ended loss. The bet size is per run, not per bet.
- No audit trail. The quote you took is gone the moment the next ball is bowled.

**Inputs.** 20 session bets in one match. ₹1,000 each. Assumed fee 8.11%, taken from a two-way quote of 1.85 on each side.

**Formula.** Turnover = 20 × ₹1,000. Expected fee = turnover × 8.11%.

**Result.** Turnover ₹20,000. Expected fee about ₹1,622 in a single match.

**Assumptions.** The 8.11% comes from our own worked pair, not from a measurement of any operator . Real session gaps are often wider. Luck moves the actual result around this average, but the fee does not move.

Twenty bets in one T20 is not heavy use for a session player. That is one bet every six balls. The maths of the fee is set out on our [overround page](/guides/what-is-overround).

## The rate moves, and nothing lets you check it

A session rate is quoted live and changes constantly. A boundary lifts it. A wicket drops it. A dot ball nudges it.

Online pricing runs on live feeds, risk algorithms and continuous adjustment as bets arrive ([Wikipedia on the mathematics of bookmaking](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathematics_of_bookmaking)). With 240 legal balls in a full T20, a quote can move hundreds of times in one game.

Now the part that matters. You cannot verify any of it afterwards.

- There is no exchange-style public record of the quote you were given.
- Verbal or chat quotes leave nothing but a message you cannot prove.
- The runs figure that settles your bet is chosen by the person you bet with.
- If the settlement looks wrong, there is no regulator to escalate to.

Compare that with an exchange, where the platform is not a party to the bet and users back and lay against each other ([Wikipedia on betting exchanges](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betting_exchange)). Even that is far from a receipt you could take to anyone in India.

A dispute here has no paperwork. Our [page on frozen payments](/guides/payment-freeze-and-chargebacks) shows what happens when money is already gone.

## Sessions usually run through an agent, not an operator

Most session betting in India does not happen on a website you signed up to. It happens through a person.

Reported practice works like this. A user pays to create a betting ID. Points equal to the deposit are credited to that ID. A deposit of ₹1 lakh becomes points worth ₹1 lakh. Agents handle the money transfers and the accounts, most apps run from abroad, and settlements are usually worked out every Monday ([NDTV](https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/inside-the-shadow-economy-riding-ipl-online-betting-networks-11560908)).

Read that structure carefully. Your balance is points in someone else's ledger. Your counterparty is a person with a phone. Weekly settlement means a losing week is a debt, not a lost stake.

Our [page on cricket IDs and agent accounts](/guides/cricket-id-and-agent-accounts) is the full account of that arrangement. If you only read one linked page from here, read that one.

Enforcement has reached this world. Cricket bookies have been investigated by India's Enforcement Directorate under the money laundering law ([Enforcement Directorate press release](https://www.etvbharat.com/english/state/maharashtra/mumbai-property-of-gujarat-cricket-bookie-anil-jaisinghani-seized-by-ed/na20230618141752378378289)).

## How a session differs from ordinary markets

**Table 1. A fixed-odds market compared with a session quote**

| Feature | Fixed-odds market | Session quote |
|---|---|---|
| What you take | A price on one outcome | A runs number, buying or selling |
| Most you can lose | Your stake | Stake per run, times how wrong you were |
| Where the fee sits | Inside the price, as overround | In the gap between buy and sell ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spread_betting)) |
| Price you agreed | Locked once accepted ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixed-odds_betting)) | Quoted live, gone after the next ball |
| Record afterwards | Bet slip, at least | Usually nothing you can prove |
| Who settles it | The platform, against a public score | The agent, against a figure they state |

Every row moves in the same direction. Bigger loss, weaker proof, faster cycle.

## Small blocks and the integrity problem

Small in-match events are exactly what corruption targets. Spot-fixing means fixing a specific event inside a match on which a betting market exists, without changing the result ([Wikipedia on spot-fixing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spot-fixing)).

The ICC code covers match and spot fixing, betting on cricket, misuse of inside information and failing to report approaches, with a global version effective 1 June 2024 ([ICC](https://www.icc-cricket.com/about/integrity/anti-corruption/the-code-pmoa)).

We make no claim about any current match or player. The practical point for a reader is simpler. In a market this small, you cannot tell an honest surprise from anything else, and the person quoting you may know more than you do.

## If a session habit has already started

Session betting produces losses in minutes, not weeks. That speed is what makes it hard to stop.

Warning signs are worth naming. Betting bigger to recover the last block. Borrowing to settle on Monday. Hiding the app or the chat. Our page on [signs of gambling addiction](/guides/signs-of-gambling-addiction) lists more, and [help for gambling harm in India](/guides/help-for-gambling-harm-india) lists what support exists.

Chasing losses is a known marker of problem gambling. Research describes chasing as continuing to gamble in order to win back losses, and treats it as a core feature of gambling problems ([study in a peer-reviewed journal](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11331606/)).

On the money side, winnings are taxed at a flat 30% under Section 115BBJ ([Income Tax Department](https://www.incometaxindia.gov.in/w/section-115bbj)), and losses cannot be set off against that income ([Income Tax Department](https://www.incometaxindia.gov.in/w/winnings-from-online-games)). Our [TDS page](/legal/tds-on-winnings-india) covers withholding.

For the wider picture, our [guides hub](/guides) lists every explainer, and the law is set out in our [PROG Act explainer](/legal/prog-act-2025-explained).

## Questions people ask

### Is a session bet the same as an over-under bet on runs?

They are close cousins, not twins. An over-under is fixed odds on one posted line. A session is quoted with a buy and a sell number, and your loss scales with how far the runs land from your number ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spread_betting)).

### Why do both the buyer and the seller sometimes lose?

Because the quote has two numbers. In the published cricket example, a quote of 340 to 350 with an outcome of 345 loses 5 unit points for the buyer at 350 and 5 unit points for the seller at 340 ([Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spread_betting)).

### Can I prove what rate I was quoted?

Almost never. Session quotes move ball by ball and leave no public record. When the deal runs through an agent's ledger, the figure that settles it is the one the agent states ([NDTV](https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/inside-the-shadow-economy-riding-ipl-online-betting-networks-11560908)).

### How much can one session bet lose?

More than the stake. Loss equals stake per run times the gap between the outcome and your number. In our worked example a 10-run miss on ₹1,000 per run is a ₹10,000 loss.

### Do agents charge interest on a losing week?

We have no verified figures on agent credit terms . Reported practice is weekly settlement, usually on Mondays ([NDTV](https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/inside-the-shadow-economy-riding-ipl-online-betting-networks-11560908)), which means a bad week arrives as a demand for money.
